FAQ

Your questions, our answers.

LMUcard and library card

You can find the functions of your LMUcard on the LMU website.

With your library card, you can borrow items from the University Library of LMU Munich and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, and use the electronic media of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.

Your library number can be found on the back of your LMUcard above the barcode.

The default password is your six-digit date of birth in the format DDMMYY.
Example: If your birthday is June 9, 2001, the password is 090601.

When you log in to your library account for the first time, you will be asked to change this password once.

Please ensure that your new password contains a maximum of twelve characters. If possible, use a German keyboard when entering your password.

Note: The University Library password is not valid for the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.

If you have forgotten your password, enter your library number when logging in and then click on the "Forgot your password?" button. You will immediately receive a new password by e-mail.

If your LMUcard / library card is not working, your library account may be blocked. Possible reasons for this include:

  • A block from your previous card has been transferred to your new card.
  • Your address is incorrect or incomplete
  • You have been (temporarily) de-registered
  • You have outstanding fees or overdue notices
  • Your library card has expired
If you are unable to lift the block yourself, please contact the information desk (UB.info) to have your card unblocked.

Detailed information on validation can be found on the LMU website.

The Studierendenwerk (Student Services Office) provides information about top-up options

Your LMUcard cannot be renewed, but you will receive a library card from the University Library. Information on the required documents can be found under issue your card.

Borrowing

Once you have found a book in OPAC, switch to the "Copies" tab. This will show you which library has the book.

  • The first four numbers indicate the location of the book
  • This is followed by the call number, which indicates the shelf location within the library.

Open-access collections and books from the textbook collections are freely accessible and can be taken from the shelf without ordering.

Collections marked with "stack" must be ordered in advance via OPAC.

There may be various reasons for this (expired library card, outstanding fees, etc.).
If you are unable to lift the block yourself, please contact the information desk (UB.info) to have your card unblocked.

Media from the stacks in the LMU main building must first be ordered via OPAC.

In the subject libraries, most media are freely accessible on the shelves and cannot be ordered.

Please write to information@ub.uni-muenchen.de, if you no longer need the books you have ordered.

You can pay your fees by debit card or ePayment. Detailed information can be found under overdue fees and payment.

If you do not have a German residence, you can only borrow books in the Historical Collections Reading Room.

If you are an LMU student and have a German residence, you must first activate your LMUcard for home borrowing.

  • Please check your library account to see if the books have been checked out to the Historical Collections Reading Room. If so, they will be automatically checked back out of your library account at the end of the loan period.
  • Otherwise, please contact information@ub.uni-muenchen.de.

No, you need a library card from the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich or the University Library. Once you have this, you can borrow books from the stacks at the LMU main building and from the subject libraries (Fachbibliotheken).

Older books and selected types of media can only be ordered for use in the Historical Collections Reading Room.

Return

Yes, returns by third parties are possible even without an LMUcard or library card. Please note, however, that you as the borrower are still responsible for returning the book on time.

No, media can only be returned to the library location where you borrowed them.

E-media

Ensure that you are recognized as an LMU member: by accessing the University Library catalogs or by subsequent authentication on the publisher's website via the e-media bookmarklet.

Alternatively, try accessing the site using a different browser. If you continue to experience problems, please report the issue, specifying the title you are looking for, to Emedien-Support@ub.uni-muenchen.de

Check whether the email has ended up in your spam folder.

If necessary, temporarily disable e-mail forwarding and try again.

If this does not solve the problem, please report the issue to Emedien-Support@ub.uni-muenchen.de

When accessing e-media licensed by the University Library, you will usually need your LMU user ID and password to log in.

Tips for resolving the most common issues with the e-media login

Media not available at the University Library

Literature that is not available in any Munich library can be ordered via the interlibrary loans service. Detailed information on the interlibrary loans service

If the desired title is not listed in Gateway Bayern, you can place a free interlibrary loan order.

Generally not available via the interlibrary loans service are:

  • Theses (master's, bachelor's, diploma, magister, and exam theses)
  • Paperbacks, if available in bookstores for up to 15 euros
  • DIN standards and patent specifications
  • Newer travel guides
  • Books for purely practical knowledge

If we do not yet have a medium in our collection, you can submit a purchase suggestion to us using this form.
